Surf Life Saving Giving | Mission Zero

The 2025/26 summer showed just how important our volunteer surf lifesavers are and why choosing a patrolled beach is important when you visit our Aussie coastline.

Across the country, volunteer surf lifesavers performed 3,989 rescues, nearly 1 million preventative actions, and more than 17,000 first aid treatments. That’s thousands of moments where someone’s day - and in many cases, someone’s life - was changed because a lifesaver was there.

The data paints a clear picture: 66% of drowning deaths occurred more than 1km from a surf lifesaving service. When surf lifesavers are nearby, outcomes improve dramatically. It’s a powerful reminder of why swimming at a patrolled beach is one of the most important decisions you can make for yourself and your loved ones.

As we head into the new patrol season, our message is simple: Stop. Look. Stay Alive.

(Insert the SLSA Stop Look Stay Alive graphic here – have checked with Nathan and is still fine to use, just no imagery with Angus Sampson)

The upcoming patrol season means volunteer surf lifesavers will be back on the sand every weekend and public holiday, ready to keep beachgoers safe. Summer is always our highest risk period, historically accounting for around 40% of annual coastal drowning deaths, so choosing a patrolled beach is essential.

Whether you’re heading out for a quick dip or a long beach day with friends, remember: the safest place to swim is between the red and yellow flags, where surf lifesavers can see you, reach you, and help you if things change quickly.

Help us bring everyone home safe this patrol season.
